The Caddo Parish School System addresses the needs of students demonstrating high academic ability through its Gateway Program. Identified students experience in-depth enrichment in accelerated subject areas, such as math, English, and social studies. Areas of enhanced instruction include creative and critical thinking, research projects, logic and reasoning, and independent studies. Gateway classes, serving over 1,300 students in preschool-grade twelve, can be found in over 20 Caddo Schools. Most gifted students are: Superior academic achievers Critical and creative thinkers Independent workers Problem solvers Task committed Self-motivated Peer leaders Screening for the Gifted Program can be requested by: Parents Teachers School Personnel Students who meet the screening requirements are referred for an individual evaluation administered by Caddo's Pupil Appraisal Staff. To qualify for the Gifted Program students must meet the state requirements on culturally non-biased tests of math, reading, and aptitude. The K-5 Gateway classes at A.C. Steere are coordinated by two Gateway Instructional Specialists who provide diverse opportunities for intellectual stimulation and development. The focus of the K-2 program is to enrich and extend the academic experiences of the students. The 3rd grade students participate in a compacted and enriched math-based curriculum. At the 4th and 5th grade levels, an accelerated language arts-based curriculum is the basis for instruction. The goals of this program are to facilitate student learning and achievement and to equip students for the challenges of a middle-school Gateway program. For More Information Contact:
