The Caddo Parish School System addresses the needs of students demonstrating high academic ability through its Gateway Program.  Identified students experience in-depth enrichment in accelerated subject areas, such as math, English, and social studies.  Areas of enhanced instruction include creative and critical thinking, research projects, logic and reasoning, and independent studies.  Gateway classes, serving over 1,300 students in preschool-grade twelve, can be found in over 20 Caddo Schools.

Most gifted students are:

Superior academic achievers

Critical and creative thinkers

Independent workers

Problem solvers

Task committed

Self-motivated

Peer leaders

Screening for the Gifted Program can be requested by:

Parents

Teachers

School Personnel

Students who meet the screening requirements are referred for an individual evaluation administered by Caddo's Pupil Appraisal Staff.  To qualify for the Gifted Program students must meet the state requirements on culturally non-biased tests of math, reading, and aptitude.

A.C. Steere also hosts the Caddo Parish Preschool Gateway Program.  Preschool Gateway provides intellectual academic and social experiences designed to challenge three and four-year-old children who demonstrate advanced intellectual abilities.  To participate in this special program, children who live in Caddo Parish must meet specific criteria that identify them as gifted.
